Built in 1928 by British-educated Baron Kishichiro Okuraas as an English-style luxury retreat, the Kawana Hotel attracted wealthy and famous Japanese and overseas guests, including actor Marilyn Monroe and baseball player Joe DiMaggio, and actor John Wayne.
